Re-election Announcement Event
Last night in a full capacity room- Sheriffs from East Carroll & Concordia spoke, along with Mayors from Vidalia, Ferriday, all the way to Tallulah. Parish Presidents, businessmen, and many others vowed their full support for Rep. C. Travis Johnson. They all echoed that he has been good for District 21 and we will keep him for four more years.
During Rep. C Travis Johnson's speech, he started off by thanking God for protecting him with traveling grace as he is always on the road and for giving him foresight to focus on economic development for his region. He proceeded to thank his wife, son, all 12 mayors, 2 sheriffs, and the district attorney for their endorsements and expressed his gratitude for the numerous people that filled the room in support of him.
Excerpts from Rep. Johnson's speech
“this campaign will be different. I now have a voting record and my record is up for scrutiny and healthy discussion on whether I did a good job or not. I like to be positive but there are some things I must address.
I have always been about action over words.... This campaign will operate in the light, and shine light on darkness.
My opponent has been circulating an article from a year and half ago that is titled, "Black Democrat Votes with Republicans.” That moment was the lowest point in my life. I was on every major news outlet, in every major newspaper, and radio station. However, the reporter had a witch hunt out against me and knew how to gaslight black voters. He was mad because I don't support allowing "boys playing sports against girls". Why did I have to be a BLACK democrat and not just a democrat? Since all votes are documented, you can go look at the 2 amendments that I voted for on the bill. I was completely good with there being two minority districts and voted on the amendments. On the final vote, the map was against my congresswoman, and I did support OUR congresswoman Julie Letlow because she was working on a project with me to bring money to the poorest district in Louisiana. When it comes to Economic Development for my people, I don't care about Democrat or Republican, my people are ranked the poorest in the nation, and I need money for them.
When I found out Louisiana Democratic Party Chairwoman Katie Bernhardt had recruited my opponent, she was mad because I wouldn't vote to allow boys to play sports against girls. We had a heated private meeting. I then resigned from my party position because of her bad leadership.
Rep. Johnson then gave the people two options:
Option 1: Do you want to support someone who was recruited by a person who does not understand your needs or where you stand on the issues....
or
Option 2: Someone who puts Economic Development as the 1st Priority. Who has brought over 17 million for our district so that we can have access to first class broadband. Created the most innovative Economic Development District in the nation where I have already put $550,000 in place to help apply for federal grants, created a Delta Bike Trail Commission and immediately after its inception was able to get 11 miles paved and put $300,000 into the commission to focus on applying for grants, created one of the most fascinating Juneteenth celebrations in the state to teach the community and bring hope. Someone who has supported four recreation endeavors to be built right here in my district that are underway, has consistently voted to increase teachers’ pay, support Sheriffs Associations because I believe in keeping the elderly safe and so many other milestone achievements because I’m working tirelessly to move our district, our home forward.
